Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my electrical panel needs to be upgraded?
You may need an upgrade if your panel is outdated, full or overheating. Homes adding high‑demand devices (EV chargers, HVAC, spas, etc.) may also require more capacity than the panel has. We can help evaluate your system honestly and only recommend an upgrade when it’s truly necessary.
It is important to note that a panel upgrade does not typically fix existing issues. If you have an outlet that does not work, or lights that flicker, a panel upgrade will not fix that problem.
Are Zinsco, Stablok, Pushmatic or Federal Pacific panels dangerous?
These older panel brands are well documented for having breaker failures, overheating issues, and safety concerns. Although not every panel will fail, they carry known, and real risks which is why insurance carriers are cracking down on them. Even new replacement Zinsco breakers are known to fail and have burn marks on them.
How long does it take to upgrade an electrical panel?
Most residential panel upgrades take 10-16 hours, depending on the setup, grounding, riser and any required service. You will be without power most of day 1, but we make every effort to get power restored before leaving.
What size electrical panel does my home need?
Many homes can operate fine without a panel upgrade. It ultimately depends on your usage and electrical consumption. We’ve seen homes that operate off a 60amp main breaker, which leaves no room for something like a circuit for an EV charger circuit or spa. If you are needing/wanting to upgrade the panel we will install a 225amp solar ready panel that meets California’s requirements.
What is a meter spot and why is it required?
A meter spot is a location approval from your utility company (often Edison or Anaheim Utilities around our area) for where the meter and service equipment will be installed. It ensures safety clearances are met by their requirements and prevents conflicts with utility access. We take care of this process for you and get their approval before beginning the work.
Can my home support an EV charger?
Most homes can support an EV charger, but the installation method depends on your available panel capacity and what type of charger you are seeking. Often you can add a charger with no upgrade at all — other times you may need load management or additional capacity. We can help you choose the best option.
Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel for an EV charger?
More often than not, no you do not. Many electricians say yes automatically, but it really depends on your home’s actual load. In many instances, a full panel upgrade is NOT required — load‑sharing devices or lower‑amp chargers may be safe, legal alternatives. Even a panel that looks full can often have safe ways of using specialty breakers to help make room for the additional circuit. We always explore cost‑effective solutions first.
Why do my breakers keep tripping?
Breakers trip to protect you from overloads, shorts, or faulty wiring. Common causes include heavy appliances on one circuit, aging wiring, loose connections, or failing breakers, as they do wear out with age. We can diagnose the exact cause and correct it safely.
Why do my lights flicker or dim?
Flickering or dimming can stem from many things. The most common issues we fix are loose connections or bad/non-compatible dimmer. Other reasons can be overloaded circuits, weak breakers, or issues with the utility feed. While sometimes minor, it can also indicate a safety hazard. We can check your system and identify the root cause.
Why do some outlets stop working?
This may be caused by tripped GFCI outlets, worn receptacles, loose wires, or a breaker issue. Sometimes one faulty outlet can affect others on the same circuit.
It’s not uncommon to see multiple outlets in multiple rooms (or even outside) be impacted as they can share the same circuit. Years of experience have paved the way for exceptional troubleshooting skills.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes, absolutely. We provide free estimates and job walks. We’ll talk through the project with you so we can understand what you are wanting in the end and make sure it matches up with the services requested. The more information you can provide us the better help provide solutions.
Do you warranty your electrical work?
Absolutely. All labor is backed by a 2‑year workmanship warranty, which is double the state’s 1‑year requirement. Most products also come with a manufacturer warranty as well. We stand behind everything we install.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — CRKT Electric is fully licensed, bonded, and insured. This protects both your home and your investment, and ensures all work meets state and local safety codes. You can always check a contractor's standings on the cslb (contractors state license board) website.
Why should I hire a licensed electrician instead of a handyman?
Electrical work requires specialized training, permits, testing, and knowledge of current code requirements. A licensed electrician can guarantee safe, compliant, long‑lasting results. Handymen legally cannot perform certain electrical tasks — and mistakes can ultimately be dangerous.
Do you provide the materials, or do I have to buy them?
We provide all materials needed for the job unless otherwise noted, such as an EV Charger. We have a lot of experience knowing what products are compatible with which brands, IE dimmers and can lights. This ensures everything meets code, fits properly, is rated for the specific application, and functions as you expect. You never have to source parts yourself unless you prefer to or want other brands that we don’t supply.
